Procedure Overview
The process of obtaining dentures is straightforward but may require several appointments. Initially, your dentist will take a mold or scan of your gums and any remaining teeth. This mold will be used to create a model of your mouth, ensuring that the dentures fit perfectly on every ridge and contour of your jawbone and gums. You will then return to try on the dentures to ensure they are comfortable and secure. If the fit is satisfactory, you can take your new dentures home. If adjustments are needed, your dentist will make them until the dentures fit correctly.
Aftercare
Taking care of your dentures is just as important as caring for your natural teeth. Both full and partial dentures are removable and it is best not to wear them at night to give your gums a break and allow your saliva to naturally lubricate your mouth. Use special denture toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush or denture brush to clean your dentures overnight, being careful not to drop them on a hard surface to avoid breakage. Lay out a towel or fill the sink with water while cleaning them. It is recommended to soak your dentures overnight in a denture solution to keep them moist and prevent brittleness.
